Hi, I’m Sharon Britton. And I’m a painter. I’m saying that as much for myself as for you. I’m 44 and I never knew I was a painter until a few months ago. But now that I know it, it’s never going to stop. I.can’t.stop.painting. In this blog, I’ll take you through how it got started, the amazing journey painting has taken me on and the wild stories behind some of the paintings I have made.

A few months back, my five year old daughter told me she wanted to put on an art show in our house. Both of my kids take art lessons, love to do art and to paint. I had bought a bunch of supplies for the kids to prepare for their show, and we decided to make a painting for fun as a family. We bought a big canvas, a bunch of paints, moved the dining room table out of the way and set down a blanket from the garage. Each of the four of us took a corner of the canvas, and we made “Element Party.”
A few days later, near the end of February, I said to myself, I think I am going to try to make a painting by myself. I have never taken an art class, and I had never painted before except to help my kids fill in a few spots. Since I am addicted to love and a self-described neurotic hippie, I made this painting of a peace-symbol-heart.
I think it is cute, but frankly, to me it looks like something a young girl would make. So I thought to myself, ok, well, I guess I’m not very good at painting, but it was fun.
But I kept thinking about the sensation of the paint brush against the canvas and the airy way painting made my head feel, and I had to make another one. Inspired by a beautiful painting by my friend and very talented artist, Paula Brett (http://paulambrett.com/), and very much encouraged by my husband to continue, I bought a another big canvas and made “Alternate System.”
When I look at this painting, I see an alternate Universe where pink and purple with a splash of neon green rule. To me it is punk rock, nose rings and the East Village as expressed through the colors pink and purple.
It is hard to describe the feeling I had when I put the last stroke on this painting. The best way to put it is to say I felt airy and light-headed as though a spirit had run through me, spent but not tired, exhilarated and in love. In love with the painting, in love with the way painting made me feel and awestruck that I was capable of creating something that appealed to me so fiercely.
I’ve been painting non-stop ever since. It feels like a passage has been unblocked and I am a geyser overflowing with paint.
I have made more than twenty-five paintings in the last two and a half months. My house has turned into a revolving art gallery, with people coming to see and purchase my work. My paintings have been selected and are featured in a digital artbook called Artbook Archive. My paintings are currently on display and on sale at a hip clothing store in our town, and I am having my first art show at the end of this month.
While all of that is mind-boggling to me, even more mind-blowing are the stories and the people and the serendipity and the coincidences and the magic that have come about in the creation of these paintings. I am going to share these stories with you in this blog. Come paint with me friends.
