I went to the art supply store, and I saw some beautiful, shiny gold paint, and I thought, I must have that. When I got home, I set out the colors that would go into my next painting with the idea that I wanted to paint a pyramid. When I was twelve, my family visited the ancient Mayan pyramid ruins in Tulum in Mexico which I am sure served as the inspiration for this painting.
After I set down the pyramid shape on the canvas, I felt I wanted the steps to go sideways instead of up and down. Then I found myself making other lines. From that point on, I heard one thing over and over in my head, like a mantra, especially while filling in the mosaic pieces,
“The paint will go where it wants to go. The paint will go where it wants to go.”
I found the complete lack of thought required by me to be a very freeing reality, and I gave into that notion totally. It felt similar to moving hands over a ouija board.
It is interesting to me that I liken the feeling to hands over a ouija board, because the only time in my life I have ever used one was on that very same family trip to Mexico in the 1970s. There was a cute boy from Texas living in Cancun with his family, and I had a major crush on him. He and his sister had a wooden ouija board. A group of us kids were playing with it, and another girl asked it whether he liked me or not. The answer came back no, and he looked at me with his dreamy twelve year old grin, and said “those things lie,” and I have never felt more flush with shyness in my life.
While I was laying down the mosaic parts of “Aztec Mosaic,” the paintbrush felt like fingers moving as though inspired by a spirit-like force just as my fingers had on that smolderingly hot summer day years ago playing with the ouija board in Mexico. It didn’t feel like I was guiding the paintbrush. It felt like the paintbrush was guiding me.
When my husband came home from work, I was still working on the painting. He said, “Oh my God, that looks like a Klimt.” He pulled up an image of “The Kiss” on his phone and showed it to me.
When I posted this painting on Facebook, one of my friends, Stacey Merrill, who is a very accomplished artist wrote this to me, “this is my fave too. I am (crazy) in love with Gustav Klimt & you are def channelling his vibe here.” Stacey posted this painting on her wall and called me her “favorite new painter,” which incidentally made my day!
Many people including my husband have said that “Aztec Mosaic” is their favorite painting of mine. Several other people have also told me it reminds them of a Klimt. I am in no way comparing myself to this great artist nor am I suggesting that I am channeling him.
However, I do feel that, with respect to this painting, there is a possibility that there are other forces at work, and that there may have been some type of channeling occurring, something I assure you, I would be skeptical of, had it not happened to me. I view the two gold cloud-like objects in the foreground as the spirits who may have assisted in the making of this painting.
